Charlie and Donald you hit it right on the nose as to why I like this photo, not many photo's exist of 460 probably because of it's old fashion look of a slide valve on a K-27 model, many probably disliked that and were drawn to the piston valve design that was new and had a more interesting look. I sure wish that someone would come out with a book that talked about the K-27 models, and explain why they became probably the D&RGW's experimental engines. This is just my opinion and none others, but I think that with all the changes and modifications that the DRGW did with the K-27 class, that had much to do with why they decided to build the K-37's rather than buy 10 new narrow gauge mountains.
It all cost money, but it must have been cheaper to reverse engineer the K-36's frame and running gear than to buy brand new. I am really surprised that there is no major book out there discussing what an amazing feet DRGW did at creating something out of Scrap materials. I often wonder if the metal that was used to cast the frames and running gear didn't come from narrow gauge and standard gauge engines that were now out of their prime sitting in the yards.
Still a Student,
Dave
