Earl, you were correct, it was the summer of 1975. I had just finished my 6 weeks of Basic Training at Ft. Riley, KS. That was ROTC training that ended just before driving west to Colorado and New Mexico. I rode the C&TS while there and then before leaving Chama chased the train to Cumbres. I was there in 1979 to ride the Great Freight. The slides were in the same slide storage box and I got mixed up which was the date.
Oh, after leaving to return to Ohio, I stopped and filled up the back seat of my Plymouth with Coors beer and paid for part of the trip. This was back when Coors had such a reputation of being something special and hard to get. My high school friend Bob was ending his ROTC camp a week after me and I picked him up on the way east.
This was strange time for the US and our culture as the times were changing. I ended up being Commissioned a 2nd Lt in USAR in 1976 and was stationed in Ft. Ord, CA. till 1978. Got to see a lot of railroading and model railroading during those years. During my time in the 7th Division we held off several attempts by Communist incursions into Southern California at Ft Irwin and Camp 29 Palms MCB. However we were not successful in stopping the Communists setting up Peoples Republics in Santa cruz, Berkley and Santa Monica.
