The restoration right now is anticipated to take between 6-8 months. Right now we are working on taking care of the details(insurance, Filing for 501c3, etc) so until those details are wrapped up we can only begin limited work. The big push was to get the Caboose indoors into a controlled environment(i.e. A place with a really big coal stove for the winter work) Now that this is accomplished, and the 1006 is safe from the winter weathe, we can turn our attention to the business matters before starting work and asking for volunteers.
Once we have established an insurance plan that protects our volunteers, we plan to begin weekly work sessions. The hope is to have the caboose finished by mid summer of 2015(July or August). However you know what everyone says...It'll be done, when its done.
As to operational plans; We have not had that discussion yet with the Town of Silver Plume. And we are waiting till a latter date when the caboose is closer to completion to have that discussion.
The Town is very attached to their caboose, and would like it to remain in the town as a permanent home. So our restoration plans are taking the assumption that the caboose will return to its former location, and it needs to be prepared to survive in the elements for the long term.
That said, Our philosophy is that operational condition is the highest state of restoration, and so when finished Caboose 1006 will be capable of operating on any railroad, or at any museum where we might have the privilege to take it.
