Hi Guys,
Here are some color images of drumheads for the San Juan and Shavano, scanned from original color slides in my collection; The first one is on the parlor car Alamosa at Alamosea on May 12, 1947, taken by my father, Donald G. Hills
The second one was also on the Alamosa, 3 years later on May 16, 1950, taken by Dad's friend Emery B. Smith. Note the skewed lettering;
The scene appears to be the same. Whether or not these are two different drumheads, or the same with the border replaced, we'll never know.
The last is of the Shavano drumhead, on the Durango, taken at Romeo on No. 215 on August 25, 1950. I have the slide marked with the photographer's name, but I've forgotten who it is.
As you can see, the image in the Shavano drumhead doesn't show up well, and this has dogged all of us for years! Several years ago there was a small print on ebay for sale that showed the scene quite well, as I believe somebody may have turned on the lights. I was not the lucky winner, and don't know who won it, but I wish I did!
