Jason draws the comparison between the link-and-pin era draft gear and the later D&RGW cheekplates for automatic coupler draft gear. These larger cheekplates were a component of the Miner Draft Gear, and so were used on other NG lines. The cheekplates mount into notches in the draft beams to better withstand stresses during coupling.
The C&S 1008 had (will have) the same longer dual-spring Miner gear on both ends.
In studying 1006, we found it interesting that there are mismatched short and long Miner draft gear on the two ends. Our assumption is that since the draft beams (lower half of the center sills) were apparently designed to be a replaceable, the 1006 had coupler/sill damage at some point.
