I've wondered the same thing -- how did they deal with the decay of the trestle? And would the rails on the filled section still be spiked to the bridge ties, or would the fill cover the top of the trestle and then have new track laid on top?

Conversely, are there perhaps cases in which the fill material could be removed to reveal a historic trestle still in place? (I'm not proposing that anyone do this, just engaging in a thought experiment.)
