Doug,
As a career airline pilot, I can assure you the last thing you want after an accident or incident is a reporter sticking a microphone in your face. That is not the time to make any kind of statement. Any responsible union or company will ensure you are removed from the scene and have folks around you to shield you from the press, NTSB, FAA, etc.
When the immediate trauma of the event has subsided and facts have been gathered, then you can make a proper statement.
In thirty four years of professional flying, I have yet to see an accurate story come from the press regarding an accident. At least an aviation one. Perhaps they have done better with the railroads, but I doubt it. Keep in mind the press has an agenda that is driven first by profit motive. Accuracy is way down on their list of priorities.
