Henry David ``Deadhead'' Hines stated he made $5,000 in 1939 on the 1940 census form. He became a Chili Line conductor when James Pheney retired. He skippered the train opposite Willis' train. When Pheney retired and returned to Durango, Willis and Hines were the senior conductors on the Alamosa-Durango combined list. Arnell was No. 5 and Baskett No. 6 on the engineers' list.
Top engineer Marvin C. Fitzer ran the Durango switch engine, No. 2 man Emmitt J. Freeman operated the standard gauge passenger train between Alamosa and La Veta, while Owen G. House and George W. Densmore where on the San Juan out of Durango. It looks like the three Durango men didn't want to uproot their families for money.
