John and Earl,
I have a old HP flatbed scanner with separate 4 slide tray. It is nearly 6 years old but was one of top of the line at that time. Resolution is fair and it is not for use in Winterail or Summerail type programs or publications.
The Cincinnati Railroad Club purchased a Epson 700 for it's ill fated archival project. The quality of the scans were top of the line. However the project fell apart due to problems with our paid consultants that made excessive demands for payment. That is another story.
One of my close friends is into publications and does most of the work on our CRRC. Miami Valley Railfan programs at Summerail at Cincinnati Union Terminal. He has a 700 Epson and a Nikon 9000 scanners. He is very pleased with the quality of the Epson and says that it is close to the same quality of the Nikon. He uses the Nikon for especially interesting or rare slides that he wants the top quality with better optics.
I should add we project some large images onto screen in a 300 seat theater. The Winterail programs are in a 1000 seat theater. John has been a presenter there for several shows. He can probably attest to the digital quality of projected slide at that event.
