I have been contemplating the same thing and in fact I purchased an Epson V600 off Craigslist recently for around $100 but haven't actually scanned slides with it....so many projects so little time....
I might suggest before you commit to a scanner that you investigate/ try a batch of slides using the services of YesVideo as I was very pleased with their conversion of my 8mm film to DVD. They provide their service through most chain drug stores and Costco where it costs $0.29/ per slide. You get about 500 slides per DVD I think and they have them uploaded to the Web for easy sharing with friends and family or groups like this
I guess it is a trade-off between how much your time, number of slides, & budget to DIY vs. just git er done.
