Just for the heck of it I ran a slide through my V600 (and then processed it through Photoshop) with this result:
I ran the same slide through my much more expensive Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED and compared the two scans at maximum magnification (actual pixels). In terms of sharpness the Nikon wins hands down as it should for the price. Surprisingly the V600 seems to compare pretty well with the shadow detail, at least with the test slide. For both scanners I used Vuescan software.
For $169 (refurbished, which is how I bought mine) the V600 does a pretty decent job on slides, and can handle larger film sizes as well. For posting stuff on the net and doing digital projection at 72 dpi, I think it is okay. If you want to do 11x14 300dpi prints, the Nikon probably is a bunch better.
I'm hearing some folks think the current Plustek scanners are about equal to the discontinued Nikon.
