I've had a fair number of stays at Carson City, last as of 2012. It's a good jumping off point for single day explorations in a variety of directions around there. Always have stayed at the Motel6, never had a complaint either. Cheaper than the Reno/Sparks locations, quiet too. Same goes for Ely, stayed M6 on the Eastern approach into town.
