Hi All,
This jogged my memory of my first trip on the D&RGW Siverton in 1972 (I was 17).
Dad and I were in one of the coaches (sheet steel bent to simulate the wood siding is all I recall.
It was a sunny day. Past Rockwood, it started raining.
On an S curve in the canyon below a wye, the engine lost its footing and the steady rythum of chuff - chuff became a sticatto ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.
An unenlightened passenger near us in the coach asked why they (engineer - train crew - railroad?) did not make the loco work like that instead of the the slow beat that was earlier.
I mentioned about wheel slip and the passenger and was thanked for the explaination.
Not stupid, just un-learned.
The conductor had them double the hill to the Wye.
