When I taught a fireman on oil, I always told them to forget about the gauges, watch the stack and their fire so they would get the feel of it. Same with the right side of the cab .... quit staring at the air brake gauges and feel the train behind you. To continue the aircraft example, when you are training to be a pilot, you are usually told pretty much the same thing to prevent what is called "chasing the needle," otherwise you remain in a cycle of overcorrection.
