About 25 years ago, I was pilot engineer on a steam trip on an eastern shortline. The owners of the locomotive were obsessed with having an Amtrak-qualified engineer to operate their locomotive. They found a young guy who was, and he was the engineer. He had never run a steam locomotive before, though, which became obvious pretty quickly.
At one point, we were working steam at about 15 mph when the engine began slipping, and he realized something wasn't right. "Where's the wheel-slip indicator?" he shouted. I told him to put his head out the window, as the rods were clattering and clanking at a much faster rate than we were moving. "What do I do?" was his next question. Amtrak engineer indeed....
