These very light railroads were pretty common where ever fruit was dried... Bruce McGregor (author of the SPC books and Birth of Califonia Narrow Gauge) has memories of setting up the temporary track in the orchards in Newark (CA)

On one level they were all about getting your wagon out of the mud...
