Some of the parts of 490 were used to rebuild sister 492. The 492 struck a large boulder in August 1962, between Dulce and Monero. The Alamosa Shop replaced the damaged smokebox and smokebox door with parts from the 490. Other parts of the 490 were used on other K-clss locomotives over the next few years.
See Russ Reinberg's 2012 Narrow Gauge ANNUAL for another fine Jim Shaughnessy photo showing the shop crew welding a new smokebox front on the 492 as well as a photo I shot of the opposite side of the 490 on the flat car. The 492 also received the 490's pilot, deck and other parts.
Sadly, the 2014 Narrow Gauge ANNUAL will be the last of this long series. It is devoted to the D&RGW's 4th Division Branches, concluding coverage of the entire 3rd and 4th Divisions from just before WWII until abandonment or conversion to tourist service like the D&SNG and C&TS.
