There was a major infestation back in 1970. On the first return trip of the 483 from Chama to Antonito it stalled at Cresco with only a two car train. We didn't have sand so a bunch of us scooped up cinders to "sand" the rail.
I don't recall a caterpillar problem between 89 and 96.
