The ironic thing of course is that the biggest cluster with steam on the UP steam program (at least in my memory) was caused by a UP maintained diesel. It is true though that had this mishap happened with SSW 819, SP 4449, etc, UP would have been responsible for repairing that locomotive. Not that it would have required any more work than they had to do on 844 or been any more expensive of course. Then of course there was the boiler tube failure on 844 or 3985 (can't remember) back in the 90's at some location I can't recall. Not sure if SP or BNSF ever had a major road failure with 4449, 819, 1522, etc. Perhaps. Having said that, NS seems to be doing just fine with it's foreign steam power lately. Either way though, I'm thankful that UP actually HAS a steam program after all these years. Looking forward to seeing the 4014 when it's restored!
