The 625 "kind of" parallels the old right of way but it's on the wrong side of the river. 
I don't know if the right of way is OK for an SUV but the hike isn't that far in. Maybe a mile or less from the last bridge that crosses the river south of the pockets.
My son and I were there about 4 years ago and 625 though not paved was just fine for the go any where SUV we were driving. AKA rented car.
