The D&RG class 60 locomotives #41 and #42 were the only R&RG Baldwin built class 60 locomotives to be built with steel boilers. All the other Baldwin Class 60s and all the Class 56s had wrought iron boilers. During a shopping, #42 lost her steel boiler to #283 and when she went to the Silverton, she had a wrought iron boiler from another class 60, possibly the 283. If the SN #1 and #33 and the Silverton #100 had steel boilers, they might have ran a little longer although there wouldn't have been work for them after WW I. #1 and #33 were running into 1917 or 1918 according to photos in Sloan's book and that was a year or two after the wrought iron boilers were supposed to be removed from service. C-16s #266 and #283 had 145lb boiler pressure as compared to the 160lb of the steel boilers built in the teens. Are these the original steel boilers of #41 and #42?
I sure wouldn't mind having a class 56 or 60 sitting out in the shop, but my dreams of yesteryear have faded into reality.
