It was interesting to see the images showing the crewmen walking around on that deep snowpack in just work boots. When I was up at White Pass back in April of 2011 for their rotary run, we had to wear snowshoes to protect us from "post-holing" (dropping in so deep you couldn't move). Even with snowshoes, I once ended up so hopelessly trapped that one of the railroad guys assigned to keep track of us had to come dig me out. They later had to do the same for one of their own, so I didn't feel so bad. When snow that deep starts getting soft, it is pretty darn scary.
I would agree that a steam rotary run is most definitely the greatest show on rails!
