Another interesting point along this section of the grade is an incline that was built from the main line up to the top of Anderson Mesa. The incline was about a mile long with a 30 grade according to one source.
An article in The Coconino Sun on Friday November 16, 1917 details an incident on the incline involving one of the Shays:
A Shay engine plunged down the Flagstaff Lumber Co. logging road incline at Lake Mary Monday evening , jumped the track and landed in the county road near the edge of the lake. Fortunately no one was hurt, but the engine is a total wreck.
The engine crew had stopped near the top of the incline to take water and in back upon the switch track where the water tank stands the engine was started down the incline. Engineer Bill Keggie had thrown the switch and the fireman was at the throttle when the engine took the incline. He jumped and escaped injury.
Just a moment before the engine came tumbling down into the road J.C. Dolan, W.H. Power and Sam Quay passed the point where the engine stopped in an auto. They are congratulating themselves on a narrow escape.
The incline was recently completed as well as the logging road leading to it and everything was ready to begin logging operations. It will take several days to get the road and equipment in shape again which means that the mill may have to shut down for a few days waiting for logs.
This photo is taken from the main with the incline heading off to the right through the trees.
A view up the incline, I didn't have time to hike it on this trip.
