There were two types of plow pilots used on the K28s. The first one was smaller than the later ones and was not braced like the later ones. You can see pics of these smaller plows in some of Dorman's books. I think the earlier plows were not sucessful as they were replaced with the newer ones, although one of the WP&Y photos looke like a smaller plow.
The 474 did not have a plow pilot as the D&RGW used wedge plow 09271 on the branches out of Gunnison and most of the smaller engines did not have need of a plow pilot (none for the C16s in later years, none for the C21s, and none for 474).
ex-D&RGW engineer told me that the crews out of Gunnison preferred the wedge gon plow to pilot plows on the engines as the pilot plows interferred with switching at Crested Butte or Baldwin. They could just put the wedge on on a siding until they needed it again.
