John, regarding lumber being cut at remote mills and hauled to Baker rather than logs, I believe the term applied to the process is"milling in transit". By locating the mills nearer the timber the ton per mile hauled over the NG were reduced as were the number of cars needed. The lumber that was cut at the several remote mills was generally rough sawed, with finishing plants in Baker where planing and kiln drying was available. Oregon Lumber company eliminated their sawmill for logs in S.Baker fairly early. Their log pond was under where in later years the SVRy machine shop was located just S. of the old engine house building that is still standing. Stoddard continued to have a full sawmill at their site over near the UP wye and Baker White Pine also continued to saw logs in S.Baker while also having a remote mill at White Pine. WHEccles had their mill at Austin, but continued to have a finishing plant in S.Baker across the river from BWP's facilities. Some saw logs continued to be brought into Baker into the 1940's as there is one or more photos of log trains behind 250 or 251. I believe that by the time the rr mainline was abandoned OLC had installed planers and dry kilns at Bates, so the truck haul was finished lumber. The plant in S.Baker by that time made window and door frames, finger jointed boxes and the similar mill work.
