I will take full credit and responsibility for the errors in the map bcp posted, as I drew it for the Sumpter Valley page on my High Desert Rails website. The map is posted on the following page:
[
www.trainweb.org]
I've been aware of many of the errors on the map for a while, I just have yet to correct them. I thank J.B. Bane for his notes and reviews, and I should have a corrected (but not perfect) map posted to the website in the near future. It's hard to get a map with any sort of fine detail together working at the scale with which I've chosen to work on this website.
One valuable resource that I've spent quite a bit of time looking at is the Oregon Lidar viewer, located at:
[
www.oregongeology.org]
After the page loads, you will see a map of Oregon with a lot of green splotches, for lack of a better term- the splotches are those areas that have been mapped with the LIDAR imagery, which (in short) uses sattelite soundings to create exacting ground profiles, revealing a lot of things like railroad grades. The green "splotch" on about the midpoint of the Grant-Baker county line covers the Sumpter Valley grade from just east of Dixie Summit to just west of Tipton...including the S-curve J.B. Bane references, plus the Wye at White Pine.
