I don't know what to add to what Rick already said.
191 will never run again with the boiler that is
presantly installed. It is constructed of wought iron, and is uncertifiable. I have not looked
that close at the running gear, but I'm sure
it's a can of worms waiting to be opened. The tank would have to be renewed from the rail up.
The cab has been completely rebuilt. This is why
191 is over at the roundhouse, so the cab can be finished as well as some other cosmetic work.
The Museums proirity now is to get 346 up and running. I believe the ultrasounds are done and the info is being compiled. My best guess is
the first and second course from the smokebox
will be replaced with one single course. Some work will be needed in the firebox, but I do'nt think any sheets will be replaced. The Museum
does have some money available for this, but as always could use some more.
318
The ultasound was done several years ago. I beleive the shell was found to be in reasonable shape Most of the steel is 3/8 or better.
The problem is the steam dome. The bottom flange knuckle is less than 1/4" thick. 346 will have to be up and running before 318 is running. keith
