Once again, I would hope that a Colorado rail line could be preserved. Unfortunately, I see some of the same problems with this as are present on the Creede Branch. The line is scenic, but not splendidly so. It is paralleled by a good highway for its entire length.
Physically, I think the line is in better shape than the Creede Branch. It also would originate at Trinidad, which is located on a major travel corridor (I-25). Still, I think it would take massive amounts of marketing to make this venture work. Not to mention, lots of money up front for equipment, working capital, etc. The problem with any such operation like this is that they tend to be chronically undercapitalized, and often offer a meager return on investment, making it even more difficult to attract necessary capital. Railroading is a capital-intensive business, whether one is hauling freight or tourists. It is not for those who are faint of heart or shallow of pocket.
I wish Rail Ventures every success. But they are taking on a Herculean task.
