Back about 1920 there was a flood on the Animas River that washed out the bridge on the Farmington branch at Cedar Hill, NM. The D&RG moved an existing bridge from somewhere in Gunnison country to replace it. The following info comes from the current owner of the bridge:
It is believed to have been manufactured by the Edge Moor Bridge Works of Wilmington, DE in 1899. This was an old bridge company (1874) that was purchased by J.P. Morgan associates along with 23 other bridge companies to form the American Bridge Co. in 1900. Dimensions of the bridge are:
Length: 167 feet
Outside width: 24 feet
Overall height: 36 feet
Calculated weight: 184-186 tons
Does anybody know the original location of the bridge and how it was moved to Cedar Hill? Did the railroad dismantle it?
The bridge is presently located on the B Square Ranch near Farmington spanning the San Juan river. It was moved there from Cedar Hill in one piece using two large oilfield trucks. It was turned over onto its side to do this. When fence posts and mailboxes were knocked down, the new bridge owner immediately compensated the owners of the posts.
