It was the use of heavier rail and the inability of a brakeman to be able to "bend the rails" that lead to the development of the point switch.

In the past 10-20 years, I have heard that stub switches with powered switch machines were tested on northern railroads (BN) so that having to dig snow out of the points would not have to be done. I do not recall where this lead.
