Much of what you may want to know is on the Red Mountain project web site:

I was a member of this group and over the course of several years we managed to acquire several thousand acres of mining property that was initially purchased by the Trust for Public Lands and they in turn transferred it to the US Forest Service. The land involved 3 counties, runs from the Telluride city limits over the mountain to the other side of Red Mountain into the Cement Creek drainage. But one trophy home has been built on a parcel we were unable to buy. Much of the property belonged to the Idarado Mining Co. plus numerous private owners. Frank Baumgartner refused to be part of the project and indeed bull dozed historic structures in spite. He also ripped up a lot of the grade into the Corkscrew Gulch turntable as he logged various of his parcels. He's an admirable fellow.
