When OY was used to clear the line in 1995 it suffered a broken half axle which caused it to break a cylinder head and other engine parts. In order to repair it it was necessary to take the siding and some of the framework which supported it apart. We discovered that the framework was shot and as a result a major rebuild was undertaken.
When we put it all back together we repainted it gray for three primary reasons:
1. We wanted to be able to tell before the rebuild pictures from after the rebuild pictures.
2. We were tired of the boxcar red which it had been for many years.
3. We felt that most of the fans and the public already had seen it operate painted red and they might like to see it painted back into the gray it had worn in the later years.
Note: We did not letter it Rio Grande because we wanted it to advertize the C&TS ( not the Rio Grande) when it got on TV as it always does when it runs.
