The current SVRR was indeed planning on building the 2-6-6-2s. The key word there is "was".
You see, around a decade ago we had plans to extend our current trackage from McEwen down about five miles to a place called Union Creek Campground. Three of these miles would have been brand new ROW with grades around 4%. Money was spent on the planning and Stone Consulting was brought in to complete the feasibility.
Because of the increased grade and expected longer trains, we started looking for more locomotives of a "good" size. Understanding that the purchase, transportation and rebuilds of these locomotives were going to cost lots of money, we started to think that the money would be better spent on building new engines, and what better suited to the SVRR then the 2-6-6-2s.
To help pay for their construction, we even thought about leasing a Unitah version of the 2-6-6-2 to the Georgetown Loop, since the CHS had no engines to run at the time. Now that would have been interesting.
However, cooler heads prevailed and it was decided that we really needed to finish what we already have before we start on the next "cool" project. So we put the Union Creek Extension and the new 2-6-6-2s on hold; maybe forever. Once we have the wye/loop built at Sumpter and the backshop finished and the car barn built and the #19 back together and........well, you get the idea. None of these projects are as exciting as new 2-6-6-2s but they are needed to help the current SVRR survive.
