Hugh,
Regarding the replacement of the 2-10-4 Texan's after the 1981 boiler explosion.
The only facts I can add is that former East African Railway employee, Dusty Durrant recommended and tried to broker a deal for the sale of 10 redundant 59 class Beyer Garratt's. These 250 ton, 100 foot long, 83,000 lb TE locomotives had turned their last wheel in revenue service the previous year. They were standing in Nairobi and Mombasa heading for the scrap yard. Meter Gauge and when built in 1955 had provision for either oil or coal firing, they were an attractive proposition for the EFDTC. Then then the Belgrano Santa Fe's became available in Argentina and the rest of the story is well known.
Regards,
TH
