Wow- what a shame. I remember there was an article (IIRC in Railfan & Railroad) about the railway about that time, and how the boilers on the 2-10-4's were becoming life-expired. Alternatives being considered were to build new boilers, import and adapt boilers from SAR 4-8-2's, import SAR 4-8-2's and re-gauge them, or I believe import Garratts from South Africa and re-gauge those.
Given how rare complete boiler replacement is in the U.S., it seems like the 2-10-4's boilers could have been saved with some outside assistance. Too bad that never happened.
