The K-37s had a tonnage rating 20 tons more than the K-36s. Since three were used on many of the Marshall Pass freights the increased tonnage ratings would mean one more car and almost two more cars could be pulled. This seemed to have been more crucial in coal country around Gunnison than in the general freight country of the Cumbres Pass line before the Farmington oil boom.
