Whoa, this may not be a crazy idea after all. Consider the mileage of the different routings. Here is what Google Maps says:
Direct: Golden to Knotts, via I-70 and I-15:
1,008 mi, 16 hours 0 mins
C&TS: Golden to Knotts, via Antonito and I-40:
1,177 mi, 20 hours 7 mins
C&TS and the D&SNG: Golden to Knotts, via Antonito, Durango, US-160 and I-40:
1,211 mi, 20 hours 42 mins
Let's also consider the oversized vehicle permits. If the move goes directly via I-70, the hauler will need to get permits from four states: California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.
Going via the C&TS and D&SNG would also requires four permits: California, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado... but NM could be skipped if the Goose were loaded and unloaded at Antonito, and went from the C&TS to the D&SNG via Alamosa and South Fork. (I do
not know if the Goose (on top of a trailer) will fit thru the tunnels on US-160.)
Now, if Russ was really crazy, he would be suggesting that the Goose also run at the Loop...
