ISTR reading that various versions of introducing more air into the firebox in this fashion were tried going back into the 19th century. IIRC it did improve combustion & thus steam generation but the noise was a real problem. I also STR a picture of an Erie engine with such a setup ca 1916 or so. The added complexity & the noise were given as reasons that the idea wound up being a failure each time it was tried.
All that is off the top of my head. I can't recall the book I read it in right now. If I can find some time, I'll check out a few of the likely suspects in my library this weekend. Of course if I have time, I need to get back to nit-picking Jimmy's posts 1st!
