I was getting caught up on some reading on some older postings here last night, and found a discrepency I thought I'd clear up.
The usually infallible Wade Hall posted that 473 got her fake diamond stack in '63. Actually, my understanding is that both 473 and 478 were both fitted with fake stacks in '61, as the D&RGW launched "Rio-Grandeland" in an effort to actually promote tourism in the area since the ICC failed to allow their last bid to abandon the Silverton Branch. This also included open obsevation cars and the addition of the first of several new steel coaches.
476 kept the original fake stack for years. 473 and 478's stacks were different, but very similar.
There are many pictures of 473 in '62 with the fake stack at the DPL site. There are none there dated '61, but in '60, the shotgun stack was still present.
I have no reason to doubt that both 473 and 478 had fake diamond stacks in '61. It was a prominent part of the new image the D&RGW needed to promote the line.
Besides, they were extremely effective cinder catchers.
