We use a #2 scoop, and even though it's worn down, I took a piece of sheet stock and pounded it to shape the end of the scoop, then the fireman tack welded it to the bottom. We beat it to shape a little more, put some vice grips on it, and welded and ground it smooth.
You are correct that firing on the D&S that much wouldn't work. The biggest difference is the coal quality. The coal in Durango has a very high ash content, more than any I've seen at any road here in the east. Therefore you will get a thick fire after a hard run to Silverton or anywhere using that coal, really.
Firing this coal is a lot easier to control and manipulate because it's much smaller in size. You don't get the large chunks that leave behind big amounts of ash or unburned coal, and because it burns so completely, banking the engine is started on the last run and buttoned up before we shut everything off for the evening.
