Hi, again -
As noted earlier - and as Dennis Tebo has related as well - there was no point in trying
to get past the mob of Festus wanna-be's in order to get a second shot on the south side
of Cajon. I wasted some time trying to find a scenic location between Summit & Hesperus,
but took a wrong turn somewhere and decided to just head north to a location that I vaguely
remembered from chasing #3751 nearly twenty years ago.
Here's another Ex-Sperry-Ment at 600mm
*, again with the cement plant north of Victorville on Old Route 66 prominent in the background
:
Backing out a bit put the whole scene in perspective; the sun had come out, and with the train running late the lighting was a lot better than if she had been on time
:
Here's a more-or-less 'normal'
* shot from the same location, showing the fall colors of the cottonwood trees, the bare rocks, and the headwaters of the mighty Mojave river
:
Zooming back in - but not TOO much - for a close-up of #844 on the far side of the river; that I caught her "rods down" is pure coincidence
:
Again, I figured there was no point in trying to get ahead of the pack in order to set up for another shot (IIRC, there's not much scenery between Oro Grande and Barstow anyway), so I headed back into town for a bite of lunch instead. Afterward, Bosco and I headed back to the park so he could run around some more. He met - and chased - his first jackrabbit (no relation to Jackelopette), while I checked out several other potential camera locations for next year's rumored return of #3751 to the Grand Canyon. A U.P. diseasel and unit train arrived after the sun had swung well to the west

Russo
* 35mm equivalent. SFAIK, there's no such thing as "normal" when it comes to Foamers - or Curmudgeons.
