It's hard to sum these things up in simple phrases without someone getting the wrong impression.
No. Chama is NOT solely dependent on the railroad and neither is Antonito.
The railroad is VERY important to the community, but it's not everything.
Some folks have been brainwashed into believing that if the RR folded, Chama would dry up and blow away. Sure, it would be disastrous, and a lot of us might leave for smokier climes, but there are a LOT of families in the valley that have been here for generations.
They have a way of surviving. They don't like it much when strangers come to down and proclaim that the locals should kiss their feet for saving the railroad and their town.
There are a lot of folks who have come into the valley, bought property and retired here because it's pretty country with a nice climate. They may ride the railroad once a year, but for them it's not the be-all-end-all that it is for us railroad nuts.
