I developed an interest in this line in the early 1970's, while it was still active as far as Coalmont. More recently, when I acquired a new stepdaughter who lives in Laramie, I started exploring to see what was left. Much of the ROW is still very visible, but all that's left of the equipment in Laramie is a wedge plow built from a former UPRR Vanderbilt tender and an outfit car. Both of these have recently been placed in a railroad park near the UPRR depot.
Aside from the first several miles west of Laramie, which is a high, dry plain, the line was quite scenic, climbing through the mountains with a tortuous route including a tight horsehope curve around Albany. It must have been a great ride to Fox Park. Unfortunately, the forests have been devastated by the Pine Bark Beetle, and many thousands of acres of trees are totally dead and waiting to burn. When they go, it will be like the cremation of a fascinating little railroad.
