I'm all for a re-enactment, too - but
...
IIRC, the RMRRC "Green" trip we were commemorating last year was on May 2
1, 1950.
The MAIN reason for the May 2
5, 2010 date was to get the moon rising above the hill at
mp 317.5 - at which we failed because we were forced to run the train much earlier than
originally planned.
IMHO, the best date for an early-season train in 2012 would be two or three days before the full moon in late May or early June, so June 1st or 2nd would be the best date - especially if the special leaves Antonito at about 2:30 or 3:00 p.m., meets the eastbound passenger at Lava Loop, and gets to mp 317.5 about 1 to 1½ hours later than last year.
Another possibility would be to leave Antonito immediately after the arrival of the eastbound passenger train on June 3rd or 4th, and have a runby somewhere between Lava Loop and The Whiplash to catch the full moon rising over the Sangre de Christo's in the background, à là Ansel Adam's famous photo 'Moonrise over Hernandez, New Mexico'.
