Oilfield casing and tubing that is fairly new out of the mill is a blue/black color with some sheen since they apply a varnish to the pipe. The collars were usually green and a thread protector was placed on the exposed threads which are blackish blue to very dull silver color.
If the pipe had been stored for very long out side the top sides were a rusted color. If the pipe was previoulsy used (pipe line, recovered from old wells etc) it was a rusty to tan color.
Most of the pipe hauled was not drill pipe, but casing and tubing. Drill pipe looks completely different.
