To see how the UK railways coped with snow it's worth looking for "Snow Drift at Bleath Gill" - it might be on you tube - but it is a British Transport Film production and well worth viewing. Rotaries where rare over here so the answer to snow was usually brute force - i.e. several loco's and a wedge plough...
