Sounds to me like this is a holdover from truck control convention. Perhaps the engines and transmissions available (as parts for big trucks) at the time would have had to have been modified to accomodate right hand drive which is my guess why this practice stuck.
Having spent about 1000 hours of riding in trucks of the 1951 and before vintage, it really cracks me up to look at one of those thing's controls and to see an automatic brake stand in the middle of truck controls.
