John:
Dave Grandt's photo pretty well tells the story, I'm sorry to hear Gomez's barn is gone.
I was there in August 1999 and the front of the building seemed at lot more rusty than in Dave's photo. The afternoon sun was hitting the front at just the right angle for me to see more lettering on the front, lower than the visible lettering in Dave's pic. Apparently, the front had rusted enough so that there was an almost minute difference in surface levels between the old writing (which had faded to nothing) and the exposed metal that never had been written upon. I just could read "Horses for Rent"; "Carriages"; and fragments of others.
I tried to photograph the writing but none of it showed up on the film. If I'd had digital back then, I might have had better luck.
That was the day I knocked on the front door of Gomez's granddaughter's double-wide trailer and she let me take all the photos I wanted of the area, including some shots through the front windows of the Gomez store. I was afraid to ask her to go inside because I had inconvenienced her enough. She and her dog stayed with me while I photographed.
Best Wishes for the Holiday Season!
