It was fairly common in the tropics. They called 'em plantation cabs. Some had side rails to keep the crew from falling overboard, others just a roof for shade. From pictures I've seen, they seem to have been more common on European-built locomotives that were exported to hot countries than on American makes.

Couldn't locate a prototype picture with a brief search, but here's a well-built model of one
