I just got back from 3 days on the Stump Dodger and got caught up on on my posting.
First, this plate is a clear fake. Simple as that. I have seen other plates from "popular" engines that have been copied and someone tried to make them look more original by stamping class numbers on the back. They usually get the class numbers wrong like on this plate.
Second. I have bought one plate from this seller when they started selling plates ago. The plate I bought was original. I have followed this seller over the years and most of the plates they have are legit.
However, I have spotted one or 2 fakes in thier sales before this. They never pull the auction. I have notified them, but they always believe the plates are real.
The lesson for all of us is this, GET RID OF ANY FAKES IN YOUR COLLECTION BEFORE YOU DIE!
The people who will sell your collection after you are gone will not know what is real and what is fake. They will fall into the trap of this seller. Now I know they have some fakes sprinkled in so I am even more cautious and careful when buying from them. If they would just have inherited a pure collection with no fakes, this would not happen.
I have had friends who are VERY skilled in plate collecting get burned. It can happen to anyone.
